I took this photo when I was in the choir. It was either1960 or1961.

Hi Pete,
Yes. It's Alreet with me.
Some other things I remember about the church. We had a mammoth fundraising for the then new church hall. I thought this was great because we had plays and youth clubs there and the old "hut" were we played skiffle wasn't really adequate. Of much more excitement to me was the fund raising for the new"second hand" church organ. This was pulled out of a methodist church in Gateshead (I think) and was beautifully refurbished by Harrisons of Durham. It was clad in limed oak and made beautiful sounds. Whats more it had an electric fan so it didn't need two choir boys to pump it while it played. I had the priviledge of playing this for sunday schools and also during much of my spare time. The cross shown on the right of the picture, carried by the Altar boys and also the plate behind it is solid silver. They used to be solid limed oak but were replaced. I could never as a youngster understand why the church needed such costly adornment. Similarly I could not understand why there was another fund raising for a new house for the vicar. He already had one of the better houses in lobley hill. I suppose this was the start of my disaffection with organised religion. Fifty years on from then I look back simply with affection for the times the people and the experiences we had.

David Wells

My dad, Ernie Wells, had the new pew (the lighter one on the right) made for the new curate. This was made out of limed oak by the patten makers at Sigmund Pumps on the Team Valley where my dad worked most of his life.
