Yes Bill, I went to the scouts, Skipper was Mr Oliver who lived in the houses on the Ravensworth Estate, a lovely bloke, and he was helped by Ray 'Kipper' Wilson who lived on Cotswold Gardens, he was a good friend to the young people on the estate, I was never disciplined enough to be a good scout but they put up with me till I lost interest! I can smell the fumes from the coke ovens just writing about it! Lanky Josh! He once dragged me home to Chiltern Gardens when I set my lip up and my mother gave him a good telling off then beat the heck out of me when he'd gone! I was a horrible kid i'm afraid. The old Library I seem to think was part of the same complex as the hut school, these were huts which the soldiers manning the big gun on the top of Lobley Hill used and were used for a primary school for a good while. I remember reading every Biggles book they had in the library!
I remember the 'old library' very well indeed. Next to the Police Houses at the top of the bank where the bridge used to start. Does anyone also remember the 34-ers Cub HQ on the Coach Road, beside the entrance to the Coke Works?
I well remember the Library at the top of the Bank, next to the Police Houses (Lanky Josh) on the site where the 'Bridge' was built. I also remember the day the new Library was opened and 'hiding' in the corner beside the window. We used to get off the bus from the Grammar School at the shops, walk to the Library and do our homework (or mess about really)!
